Philadelphia Fight 2011 tour of England makes history

The Wigan Warriors Community Foundation and the Riversiders RL will be hosting a truly unique event this year.  On Thursday 21st April the first ever UK v USA Club Rugby League match will take place between the Riversiders RL and the Philadelphia Fight.

Local ward councillors are helping history to be made at Robin Park Arena next month with the world’s first UK versus USA rugby league match.

Uncle Sam will be in town as top-ranking semi-pros The Philadelphia Fight play local side Wigan Riversiders on Thursday April 21, in a game hosted by the Wigan Warriors Community Foundation (reg. Charity no 1129008) and Wigan Riversiders. It’s a fundraiser for both the Wigan Warriors Community Foundation and the Wigan Riversiders RL.

Kick off is at half seven, but there are plenty of things happening to make a real evening of it, including the Wigan Warriors’ cheerleaders, under 8s rugby games at half time, fireworks as the players enter the field and both national anthems sung live by a local singer. The gates open at half six.

Elected members in the Douglas Ward, home of Robin Park, have been supporting the event. Cllrs Mike and Shirley Dewhurst, and Cllr Joy Birch – the deputy Mayor – have donated £1000 from their Brighter Borough funds to help the fundraising. The event will be held in the presence of the Mayor of Wigan.

On behalf of the Douglas ward members, Cllr Mike Dewhurst says: “Wigan loves sport and Wigan loves innovation. So your local councillors are proud to help to bring a sporting first to our town and we’re all rooting for the Riversiders on April 21.”

The Philadelphia Fight are founder members of the USA Rugby League and are also noted for their charity fundraising activities.
