Match OfficalsPosition Overview
The USARL National Rugby League Referee is responsible for delivering high-quality match officiating across USARL-sanctioned competitions, including domestic competitions, National Championship events, representative fixtures, and other elite rugby league programs.
The Referee is a key ambassador for the sport, ensuring matches are conducted safely, fairly, and professionally in accordance with the International Rugby League (IRL) Laws of the Game and USARL competition standards.
This role requires strong leadership, decision-making ability, excellent communication skills, and a commitment to developing the growth and standards of rugby league in the United States.
Key Responsibilities
Match Officiating
- Control matches in accordance with IRL Laws of the Game and USARL competition regulations.
- Apply laws consistently while ensuring fairness and player safety.
- Make clear and confident decisions regarding:
- Penalties and infringements.
- Scoring decisions.
- Tackle and ruck management.
- Player misconduct.
- Time management.
- Maintain control of match flow, intensity, and overall game management.
- Ensure match procedures are followed, including kick-offs, restarts, substitutions, and stoppages.
- Work collaboratively with touch judges, video officials, and match-day officials where appointed.
Player Safety & Welfare
- Prioritize the safety and welfare of all participants.
- Identify and manage dangerous play.
- Enforce concussion and player welfare protocols.
- Promote a respectful, safe, and inclusive playing environment.
- Take appropriate action against misconduct or behaviour that impacts the integrity of the game.
Match Administration
- Complete required match reports and referee assessments.
- Provide accurate reporting of incidents, penalties, and disciplinary matters.
- Communicate effectively with Competition Managers and USARL officials.
- Attend referee briefings and post-match reviews when required.
Referee Development & Standards
- Participate in USARL referee development programs.
- Attend referee education sessions and law updates.
- Complete required referee accreditation and certification pathways.
- Participate in performance reviews and coaching sessions.
- Support the development and mentoring of emerging referees.
- Contribute to improving officiating standards throughout the United States.
Required Qualifications & Experience
Essential
- Strong understanding of rugby league laws and game principles.
- Ability to make accurate decisions under pressure.
- Strong communication and leadership skills.
- Ability to manage players, coaches, and match-day situations.
- Commitment to fairness, integrity, and professionalism.
- Reliable availability for assigned fixtures.
Preferred
- USARL Referee Accreditation or recognized rugby league referee qualification.
- Previous experience officiating:
- Club competitions.
- State or regional competitions.
- Representative matches.
- International fixtures.
- Previous rugby league playing experience.
- Experience using referee assessment and feedback systems.
