USA Names Squad for Crucial Jamaica Game

The US Association of Rugby League Inc has named the Hawks’ 19-man squad for the second and crucial round of the 2021 Rugby League World Cup Americas region qualifying series.

The USA will take on old rivals Jamaica for all the marbles in the second match of a doubleheader on Saturday, November 17, 2018.

Jacksonville, Florida, again will be the venue for the match. The winner of this game will secure automatic qualification to #RLWC2021, while the runners-up will have the opportunity to participate in a World playoff group in 2019.

The USA squad is the same one that comfortably dispatched Chile in the first round and includes nine domestic-based players, as well as two others who have been playing overseas and eight heritage players.

USA Hawks head coach Sean Rutgerson says it’s never an easy game against Jamaica and this time looks to be even more difficult given their impressive first up win against Canada, but even so, he’s very confident the US can get the job done. “They’re pretty sharp and I think we’re going to have to really take it up about another three levels from where we were in our last game to get on top of them."

“It’s going to be a real challenge and it should be a real good game. But we’ve got a good side. We’ve got plenty of good players with plenty of spirit and the guys are ready to go that 80 minutes and put the hard work in. It’s all I could ask for from the guys.”

USA Hawks 19-man squad:
Nick Newlin (Atlanta Rhinos), Ryan Burroughs (Barrow Raiders), Brandon Anderson, Jamil Robinson (Brooklyn Kings), Jerome Veve (Burleigh Bears), Haveatama “Joel” Luani (Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs), Chris Wiggins (Delaware Black Foxes), Bureta Faraimo (Hull FC), Kyle Grinold, David Washington (Jacksonville Axemen), Chris Frazier (NOVA Eagles), Kyle Denham (Philadelphia Fight), Andrew Kneisly (Philadelphia Fight), Cory Makelim, Mark Offerdahl (Sheffield Eagles), Connor Donehue (Sunshine Coast Falcons), Joe Eichner (Junee Diesels), Danny Howard (Wentworth Magpies), Kristian Freed (Wests Mitchelton)

USARL has set up a GoFundMe page looking to raise $10,000 to help players cover the costs of this tournament. Please visit https://www.gofundme.com/help-the-hawks-get-to-the-world-cup if you would like to contribute.
