Past USA Rugby League (USARL) national championship winners the Brooklyn Kings have posted the biggest score of a round of exhibition games in New York City.

The Kings hosted three other teams from the east coast that combined in a doubleheader on Saturday, July 23rd.

The Kings faced off against the Boston 13s, while the Delaware Black Foxes squared off against independent side New York Freedom.

Brooklyn was too good for Boston winning the early match 50-16. In the second game, the Black Foxes outlasted New York Freedom 36-30 in a close one.

“Matches were well attended by all teams and ran seamlessly,” says Chris Martin of the Kings.

He says there are plans to stage more rugby league matches in the northeast in the future.

“Working towards more matches for next season, either as part of a league, or individually between the clubs.”

Black Foxes head coach Ian Ferguson says his team showed a lot of improvement from their last hit out in June.

“We definitely knew it would be a challenge especially against a quality side like New York, but we have a solid combination of new players and veteran leadership on our team and have improved significantly since last month’s 9s tournament,” he says.

“I think a lot of people tend to overlook us because we’re from a small state and market, so we definitely play with a chip on our shoulder.

“Saturday’s result may be a shock to some, but we believed in ourselves and I’m extremely proud of this team and the effort they put in to get the result we wanted.”
