The Fight were in full control of the Round 1 inter conference clash from the opening kickoff, scoring on their first set. The try was set up on the right hand side, as center Rhys Bowdich went over the line. Winger Mike Timpano converted the try. Timpano started the year perfect, going 12 from 12 on conversions, continuing his phenomenal 2015 season. Bowdich’ try was followed up quickly on the next set by Prop Josh Vaartjes. Both Bowdich and Vaartjes scored quickly afterwards pushing the score to 24-0 in the opening 20 minutes.

First half scoring continued through the outside backs. Bowdich scored his third. Fullback Roman Lowery added two, and winger Tristan Sylk bagged a try. By halftime, the scoreline was 48-0, and the Fight were in full control.

Scoring in the second half continued the same was as it did in the first half. Tries were scored by lock Casey Clark, second rower Andrew Tully and 5/8th Jesse Fogg. Lowery also added to his try total and went over for another. By fulltime the scoreline read 72 – 0.

During the match, outstanding performances were given by the forwards. Front rowers Josh Vaartjes, James Coleman, Joe Cesario and Sam Pearce put in tireless work in both attack and defense. Coleman worked hard both on and off the ball, making hitup after hitup and tackle after tackle. Pearce put in yeoman’s like work, making multiple meters after each hit up. His work was enough for him to be voted Players Player. Vaartjes looked just as strong, winning the upfront battles and scoring two tries of his own. His work was good enough for Man of the Match.

Next week, the Fight will host the expansion club, the White Plains Wombats. Kickoff will be at 5pm. Come out and support your Fight!
