Visit Jacksonville to sponsor qualifier
THE final spot in rugby league’s World Cup will be up for grabs at the University of North Florida when Visit Jacksonville hosts a thunderous clash on November 16.
The United States Hawks and the Cook Islands Kukis have each named their extended squads for 2021 World Cup qualifier a week from Saturday, kicking off at 5pm.
The 15th spot in the England-hosted 2021 global tournament was finalized at the weekend with Greece defeating Serbia in Belgrade, qualifying for their first World Cup.
“We are looking forward to the challenge of taking on the Cook Islands, especially as they are pretty much all full time players,” United States coach Sean Rutgerson said.
The Hawks had the chance to qualify a year ago at the same venue when they were upset by Jamaica and receive a second chance via repechage this month.
The Cook Islands competed in the 2000 and 2013 World Cups and are expected to replace the unavailable Australia in the Oceania Cup next year.
In the Kukis' team, Brisbane Broncos’ Alex Glenn returns after injury ruled him out of the recent World Cup Nines.
Other well-known pro stars include Parramatta’s Brad Takairangi and St Helens’ Dominique Peyroux, new South Sydney signing Steven Marsters, Warrington’s Anthony Gelling and Wakefield’s Adam Tangata.
The Hawks also draw players from around the world, including local boys Charlie Jones and Khalial Harris from the Jacksonville Axemen.
