In the Northeast, a three way battle exists for title contention with the Brooklyn Kings now throwing their hat into the ring.

The Kings squad are growing in confidence after their shock comeback effort against the Rebellion that ended in a 30-30 draw.  Highlights of that game were many but none more fitting when co-founder and CEO, Matt Bailey scored the clubs first try.

Bailey, an Australian native has been a driving force of developing Brooklyn’s first ever Rugby League club after getting a taste of playing in the states back in 2010.  Back then he played for another New York team in the former AMNRL competition under the Northern Raiders banner.  It was there Bailey was introduced to teammate Justin Coffman; a friendship that would reunite them years later when Bailey returned to the USA after completing his studies in Australia.

When being interviewed Bailey spoke about events leading up to the 2014 season, “It’s all happened so quickly. It wasn’t that long ago we were standing on the Brooklyn Bridge reminiscing about how that year was such a great summer and we should consider starting our own club.”

It was shortly after that decision, Bailey met in New York with USARL board members Peter Illfield and Steve Williams to discuss the idea of a New York based team.  That meeting proved pivotal with the two officials confident of Bailey’s intention and future commitments required to grow the sport of Rugby League. At the following USARL board meeting, the Kings were unanimously voted in along with 3 other new teams.

Tomorrow night (Saturday June 7 @4pm) the Kings will celebrate their first ever home game against a daunting looking Boston 13s outfit that in week 1 dismantled a travel worn Baltimore Blues team.  Boston are another team many believe will own top spot in the North-east thanks to a strong youth development program that's quickly filling a number of spots on team sheet. A win against Boston could shape the remainder of the their season with the Kings having one of the tougher schedules in weeks to come.

Bailey added, "Boston have a good young team and they are starting to reap the rewards of their youth development efforts.  Win or lose tomorrow, were proud of what we've already accomplished.  Rugby League is the greatest game of all and now it has a home in the heart of Brooklyn."

The game kicks off this Sat @4pm at Midwood Athletics Complex (1550-1598 Avenue K, Brooklyn, NY)
