An Improved King Makes It A Tough Fight

With back-to-back matches, the first being last week's barnstorming 40-14 winning encounter over the Kings at the Fight's home field, A.A. Garthwiate Stadium, Conshohocken, the Kings again gave the Fight a fright by opening with an early 4-pointer and providing a much improved performance in the 2013's Champions hard fought 28-20 win over the Kings in Brooklyn.

The Brooklyn Kings took the early 4-0 lead to the end of the first quarter and extended their tally to 10-points in the second, but the Fight regained composer in the same quarter to post 2 tries and 2 goals for a slight lead 12-10 at half-time. The Fight's first 4-pointer was a break-out try to Aussie 2nd-row, Rhys Bowdich, taking 3 bursts of speed over 50yds to out run the Kings defense. Fight newcomer and winger, Roman Lowery, crashed over for the Fight's 2nd try in the 2nd quarter, and his first for his new club. Winger Mike 'Squirrel' Timpano converted both tries.

At half-time there was only 2-points the difference and the Kings were performing well in front of their home crowd.

After the break, the much improved Kings battled away with some strong attack and well placed kicks but the Fight defense held strong several times on their try-line to deny the Kings any more points in the 3rd quarter. The Fight's other Aussie 2nd-rower, Jackson Springer, denied the Kings on several occasions with some deft tackling and brut-strength man-handling to keep the Kings scoreless. The Fight posted their third try by another new comer to the Fight,Tristan Sylk playing in the centers. Sylk threatened in the first half of the game to show his potential, and it came with a strong run busting several tackles to score the Fight's 3rd try for the match, Squirrel converted again.

The final quarter was an even affair with 2 tries and a goal each. Springer not only continued in his outstanding defensive role, but also continued to seek inroads through the Kings defensive line with plenty of strong running.

The Fight's halves, Captain Rich Henson & Aussie Tom Dawney scored a try a piece in the final quarter for the Fight to run out winners in a much tougher game, 28-20. Henson's try came from a clever chip by Dawney 35 yards out from the Kings line. The awkwardly bouncing ball was plucked out of the air, and the Kings fullback's hands, by a pirouetting Dawney who found himself stumbling for the try-line backwards, only to offer a safe overhead basketball pass to the supporting Skipper to complete the move. Dawney also used some clever foot work to get over the line for his own try to keep the Kings out of the match.

Springer was the Coach's best on field, Dawney was close behind him, even though he missed the first quarter due to flu symptoms.

Try scorers were: Rhys Bowditch, Roman Lowery, Tristan Sylk, Rich Henson and Tom Dawney.

Goals: Mike Timpano 4.
