First Ever USA Masters Rugby League Matches Set For Big Vegas Weekend

With the excitement of the NRL taking their competitive game of Rugby League on the road to Las Vegas on March 2, a tournament of Masters Rugby League has been set as a precursor for the USA vs Canada match on Friday March 1st. 

The draw of rugby league fans and players to Las Vegas the first week of March is a great opportunity to promote the Masters game. Mike Brogan, who is heading up the event, is excited to showcase the game. “Growing rugby league in the US has been a passion of mine for some time,” says Brogan. “Nicholas Mew from Canada reached out to both myself, and Craig Mclaren of Australia to ask if this could go ahead. Nicholas also reached out to Peter V’ Landy’s at the NRL to explain our plans and to emphasize what Masters Rugby League players bring to the sport.”

A number of rugby league events have been added to the festivities throughout the week, including referee training, NRL talent combine, NRL Las Vegas 9’s Tournament and the USA Hawks vs Canada Wolverines match on Fri. March 1st.

“I approached Billy Neilson of the USARL to ask if he would come on board to help make this

event happen.” say Brogan. “We agreed that the Masters games can precede the USA vs Canada match. All 3 games will be played for 40 min, with 3 total games. This tournament will be the first ever Masters Rugby League played in the US.”

Masters Schedule is planned as follows:  

3:45pm USA V Australia

4:30pm Canada V Australia

5:15pm USA V Canada

Brogan is hoping this will grow interest in the Masters competition and the event will grow over time. “We would like to make this an annual event for each of the five years the NRL plan to come to Vegas. Wales, England and New Zealand have already indicated their interest in the future festivals. Long term, the goal is for the masters’ Rugby League clubs to be formed in the United States and support the increase of clubs in Canada, and welcoming touring sides from all over.

When it comes to playing Masters Rugby League- these guidelines ensure the game is a great experience for everyone:

· Masters is non-competitive

· Masters does not welcome nor allow rough or over vigorous play

· Masters is about enjoyment and having a good time – on and off the pitch!

· There are no winners; no champions; no leagues; no cup finals

· All games end in a 0-0 draw

The most important rule is “everyone has to buy a drink for their opposite number!”

The Masters Rugby League tournament will take place on Friday March 1st. Venue TBD (There is a venue change for the USA Hawks vs Canada). Kick off for the first round is set for 3:45pm. Entry is included with tickets purchased to the USA vs Canada game.
