USA Pioneers create history with win in Jamaica

The USA Pioneers kicked off their historical tour to Jamaica with a 46-20 win over local Kingston club Duhany Park Sharks, in Kingston, on Thurs night.

USA Pioneers Rugby League LogoThe Pioneers is the first national team of its kind out of the USA. Self-funded by the players & staff on tour, their mission is one of development both within the USA & abroad.

Assisting with development in Jamaica, the Pioneers encouraged 5 Duhaney Park Sharks to join their ranks for the match. Player on the wing for the Pioneers, Shavon Cuff excitedly scored 2 tries.

This history making tour for the Pioneers also provided the opportunity for USA players who would not expect to be selected for a national team, to play alongside the likes of USA's Rugby League World Cup 2013 star Michael Garvey.

Garvey, playing in a newly acquainted position of half-back, had a powerful game in both attack & defense scoring 4 try's and kicking 5 goals for a personal tally of 26 points with a MVP performance.

Other try scorers were the Philadelphia Fight's Jared Frymoyer and Matty Scherr along with Pioneers Captain Coach and five-eighth Craig Webb. Webb, from USARL's newcomer club the NOVA Eagles, also kicked a goal.

Frymoyer had an outstanding game in the unusual role of hooker, with other solid performances coming from the Bulls', Andrew Kneisly at lock, Boston 13s, Tyler Lerardi at center and prop Daniel Gabrielli from the Fight.

The next match for the Pioneers is 4.00pm, local time,Saturday April 5 against Jamaica's high performance team, the Hurricanes.
